Death and Tax Homework

I hope everyone's Thanksgiving went well. We had a very nice time in Ville Platte. It would have been nice to see a little bit more of Mom's side of the family, but I should be able to see them at Christmas.

I am trying to finish up a Tax project, but my stupid AGI won't equal out to the check figure the prof. gave us. Never own a business. If you do, make sure that you pull an official salary from it and have an Accountant (not me) do the tax returns for the business. Dude. I think it would also be helpful if the fictional couple were real people that I could ask questions to find out what the hell they were thinking.

Anyway, just felt the need to post something...and take a break from the project.

Oh, and if you ever had pick any other name to go by, what would it be?

The process of becoming CIA has started

This has been a bit of a crazy week. The big CIA (certified internal auditior) exam was this week. It consists of 4 parts: The standards, Practical Applications, Accounting (in various forms) and Business Management Skills. I only took 3 out of the 4 parts, choosing to put off the accounting section until I've taken a few more classes and have more time. The other 3 went relatively well, but I won't know if I passed until the middle of January. I only took the business management skills part because I have a degree in that and I was hoping it would only take a little bit of review. However, as time ran short, I decided to focus on the first 2 parts of the exam and hope for the best on that part. I'm sure I will have to take it again in the spring, but that's ok. I've got plenty of time. With my luck, I'll pass the management part and fail the other two....

So, in total, I will have only been to 2 classes this entire week. I should go to my classes today, but I've got to go to Angola (and no, not to pick up men...although, I'm waiting to hear words of encouragement from my mom as I walk out the door) and take an Intermediate Accounting test this afternoon. I have serious plans for getting drunk tonight? Anyone else?

Seizures

My sister and brother-in-law have been out of town since Saturday. As a result, the Fontenot household has been invaded by a surly 2 1/2 year old and a diabetic dog. Today, as I was trying to talk myself into going to my Intermediate Accounting class (it's a struggle some days), the dog decided to go into a seizure. Although this was not his first seizure, it was the first one I've seen him experience. Talk about freaky! He's okay now. I force fed him some syrup and he came out of it. He's a bit dazed and seems quite confused, but hey, at least it gave me an excuse to skip class!

Geaux Tigers!

Well, LSU put in a good game against Alabama last night. This was the first time since 1969 that LSU has beaten the Tide at home. Sadly, I did not go the game because the big Certified Internal Auditing exam is coming up this Wednesday and Thursday. I did, however, put down my study guides and sample tests to see a few key plays of the game (mostly the touchdowns, leading me to believe that if I had watched the entire game, the score would have been 1000 to zero).

LSU's Cadets of the Old War Skule (COWS) hosted the 10th annual LSU Salutes. It is a ceremony that coincides with Veteran's Day and includes a military parade, induction of former LSU alum into a hall of distinction, among other typical military activities. Since my sister, Renee', is the Cadet Colonel of the Air Force ROTC and my Dad is an active member of the COWS, I was really looking forward to this ceremony. It was fun to see Renee' bossing people (other than me) around as she commanded her troops. I jumped about a foot off the ground when they did the first ever, cadet-run, 21 gun (cannon) salute. In addition, this was the first time I've ever seen a B-52 fly-over. I've seen the F-15s and a few other aircraft fly-overs, but never the B-52. It was amazing. You don't hear them coming at all. As it flew away, it literally disappeared into the clouds...one second it was there, then in the next, it was just a puff of smoke. No wonder it is such a huge part of the Air-force's defense strategies. Amazing.

Enough of a break...risk analysis and control questions are calling my name....

Rated R

LSU's Reveille newspaper has a weekly column called "On Top". The columnist topics concern sex and can be considered somewhat "racy". However, The Reveille is a college newspaper, not a elementary school newsletter and the column is completely appropriate to include in The Reveille.

Some students don't agree. This has sparked a lot of controversy on campus and the student government (who can't even seem to be able to run an election without problems) has even discussed having the column pulled from The Reveille.

GROW UP! If you don't like the column, don't read it. It doesn't objectify women...Hell, its written by one! I personally think the columnist does a good job at providing researched information on topics that EVERYONE discusses with their friends. The only difference between what she writes about and what those conversations contain is the fact that she actually researches her topic before writing about it.

Norway's Fight Against The Germans

Did you know that part of Norway's defense against the Germans in WWII involved the use of itching powder? Apparently, the stuff was strong enough that a few granuals of it rubbed into someone's eyes could make them temporarily blind. They would sneek it into their laundry and even used it in some of their contraceptions. EWWWW...

FireFox

I'm trying out FireFox 1.0 as my browser...so far so good. My only complaint is that the web pages only fill up about 3/4ths of the screen. Is there anyway to change that?

Bad Taste?

Is it wrong that I'm watching TBS' The Biggest Loser while eating candy?

Is this as bad as the time that I had to wait to go to the gym so that I could finish the chocolate I was eating?

Well, this isn't a recruiting event...bring on the alchohol!

Well, the trip to Houston was great! The Sam Houston was fantastic. The beds were super comfortable and the amenities were really nice.

I did ask my recruiting coordinator to double check on what city my offer was for, since I thought it was Dallas, but I was in Houston. She quickly realized that they had changed it, but had failed to communicate that to me. So, I'm moving to Houston next summer, instead of Dallas. Houston's cool with me, it was technically listed as my first choice. It's a little closer to home, there is a lot to do in Houston and I have friends there, so I'm very excited.

We had dinner at Brennan's on Thursday night. The regional parter made us feel very welcome (see the alchohol joke in the title) and we were able to meet with the team of people that we would be shadowing the following day. The only weird, creepy thing that happened was when one of the members of the team I was to shadow on Friday hit on me during dinner infront of not only the other 8 people at the table, but the regional partner also. Not only did he make me feel uncomfortable, but it was really unprofessional and slighty lecherous.

Friday was nice. I was able to visit a client that makes gas compressors and get a tour of their manufacturing facilities. I also got to see a little bit of what Deloitte does for a client and learned what expectations that Deloitte has for its college hire employees and interns. The day wrapped up with a trip to the downtown office and a meeting with one of the partners in the "duckblind". That would be a room on the 25th floor that has a great skyscraper view of Houston and a stuffed duck on the wall. I didn't see it, but apparently the regional partner has a deer head in his office.

Like I said, the trip went well and I left with a feeling of confidence in my decision to accept the offer from Deloitte.

Houston, watch out!

Bloglines?

There are several blogs that I check out often. To do this easily, I've always gone to Richard's Blog and used the links that he has set up there. About a week or so ago, I downloaded bloglines and attached some of the links that I visit more often than others to my blog. However, I still find myself going to Richard's blog and using the links there. Weird me.

Tomorrow I fly to Houston to have a site visit with Deloitte. I'll be working in Dallas, but they have me visiting Houston. I'm not complaining, just wondering why. It doesn't really matter because it should be a fun trip. They're putting us up at a swanky hotel and buying us dinners at nice restaurants. I'll be back on Friday and will let you know how it all goes.
